Police Action in Bareilly After Bajrang Dal Disrupts Birthday Celebration

Incident Overview

Authorities in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, have initiated legal proceedings against two individuals following an incident where members of the Bajrang Dal interrupted a birthday party, accusing two Muslim attendees of engaging in 'love jihad'.

The gathering was hosted by a nursing student for her classmates, comprising six girls and four boys. Reports indicate that Bajrang Dal members entered the venue, alleging that the Muslim guests were involved in 'love jihad', and physically assaulted one male guest and a female attendee who attempted to intervene.

Understanding 'Love Jihad'

'Love jihad' is a controversial theory propagated by some Hindutva groups, suggesting that Muslim men deceive Hindu women into romantic relationships to facilitate their conversion to Islam. The Indian government has clarified that current laws do not recognize this term.

Legal Actions Taken

On Sunday, police filed charges against the two identified individuals and several others under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which include causing bodily harm, trespassing, and inciting public disorder.

Earlier in the day, law enforcement stated that they found no illegal activities occurring at the café and took preventive measures against those involved under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

Public Reaction

Footage from the incident depicted a group of men entering the café and attacking the Muslim attendees while chanting 'Jai Shri Ram'. Another video showed police restraining a girl who was protesting against the intruders.

This incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many questioning why the police chose to take action against the Muslim boys instead of the aggressors.
