Poland Revokes Zelenskyy's Highest Honor Amid Historical Tensions
Poland's President Revokes Award
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has rescinded the Order of the White Eagle, the nation's most prestigious honor, awarded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This decision stems from Zelenskyy's choice to name a military unit after a Ukrainian paramilitary group linked to atrocities against Poles during World War II. Nawrocki stated, "I have decided to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from the President of Ukraine," emphasizing the importance of remembering historical sacrifices and the need for truth and respect regarding past wounds.
The revocation followed consultations with the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle. Nawrocki's announcement came after Zelenskyy authorized the naming of a unit within Ukraine's Armed Forces as 'Heroes of the UPA,' a reference to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which is accused of committing mass killings in Poland during the 1940s.
Reasons Behind the Revocation
Zelenskyy received the Order of the White Eagle in 2023 from former President Andrzej Duda for his contributions to security and human rights. However, the recent decree to honor the UPA has led to this significant reversal. Nawrocki remarked that for many Poles, the UPA is primarily viewed as a group responsible for heinous crimes against Polish citizens during the war, as he articulated in a detailed social media address.
Poland's Ongoing Support for Ukraine
Despite the withdrawal of the award, President Nawrocki assured that Poland's backing for Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression remains steadfast. Notably, Poland is set to host a significant event focused on Ukraine's post-war recovery, with Zelenskyy anticipated to participate.
Historical Context of UPA's Actions
The UPA, which fought for Ukrainian independence against both Nazi and Soviet forces, is implicated in the wartime deaths of tens of thousands of Poles, particularly in the Nazi-occupied areas of Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. In 2016, the Polish Parliament classified the UPA's actions as genocide. Both Ukrainian and Polish armed groups have been accused of engaging in violent reprisals that resulted in substantial civilian casualties on both sides.
