PM Modi's Melbourne Visit Highlights

On July 10, during his three-day trip to Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the renowned Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He expressed India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympics and shared his excitement about Chennai being the venue for the opening match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27.

Earlier that day, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the BBL 2026-27 season will kick off in India, with Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium hosting the inaugural match in December. This announcement was made during a joint statement with PM Modi.

Cricket Australia confirmed that the season opener will feature the Melbourne Renegades against the Perth Scorchers on December 12, marking the first BBL match to take place outside of Australia.

India's Olympic Aspirations and BBL in Chennai

While addressing the audience at the MCG, PM Modi highlighted India's preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and its bid for the 2036 Olympics. He welcomed the news of Chennai hosting the opening match of the BBL season, emphasizing that hosting such events in India guarantees significant reach and viewership.

"India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and is also striving to host the Olympics in 2036. With Brisbane hosting the Olympics in 2032, we are developing sports infrastructure on a grand scale for these global events. I am thrilled that a Big Bash League match will be held in Chennai, India, as it ensures extensive reach and viewership for any sporting league," he stated.

Cricket: A Bridge Between Nations

PM Modi remarked that the MCG evokes two feelings for Indians: the thrill of an India vs Australia match and the understanding that cricket is a shared passion uniting both countries. He noted that the sport has fortified his friendship with PM Albanese, serving as a natural connection between the two leaders.

"Entering the MCG brings two emotions for any Indian: the excitement of an India-Australia match and the realization that cricket is a shared passion in both our nations. Today, there is no pressure of a 'last-over finish,' just the joy of the game, the warmth of our friendship, and the energy of future champions," he said.

A Decade of Sporting Opportunities

PM Albanese welcomed PM Modi to the MCG, emphasizing the historic cricket rivalry between India and Australia and the record attendance during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. He acknowledged cricket legends Lisa Sthalekar and Steve Waugh for their contributions to the sport.

"Prime Minister Modi, welcome back to the sacred turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the birthplace of Test Cricket. Just two years ago, we witnessed a record attendance of 370,000 fans during the Border-Gavaskar series. This reflects the passion and respect in our rivalry. It is an honor to be joined by cricket legends Lisa Sthalekar and Steve Waugh, who are revered in India as well," he stated.

India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap

Notably, PM Modi and PM Albanese visited the Shane Warne Stand at the MCG, where they unveiled the Roadmap on Sport Cooperation. This initiative aims to enhance sporting ties between Australia and India, combining Australia's expertise in hosting major events with India's growing ambitions.

The roadmap outlines collaboration in areas such as capacity building, sports science, and technology research, and is expected to deepen cooperation in hosting major international sporting events. PM Modi emphasized that this collaboration will extend beyond cricket, focusing on sports training and technology to strengthen the partnership between the two nations.
