PM Modi's Address in Ghana

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a significant speech at the Parliament of Ghana, expressing his profound honor to address a nation that embodies democratic values. He conveyed the greetings of 1.4 billion Indians to the citizens of Ghana, emphasizing the historical ties between the two nations. Modi remarked on their shared colonial history, stating that despite the challenges faced, both countries have maintained a spirit of freedom and resilience. He likened the friendship between India and Ghana to the sweetness of the renowned Sugar Loaf Pineapple, a local delicacy.

He stated, "The histories of India and Ghana bear the scars of colonial rule, but our spirits have always remained free and fearless. We draw strength and inspiration from our rich heritage... Our friendship is sweeter than your famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple."

A Warm Reception

During his address, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he received from the Ghanaian people. He noted, "As the representative of the world’s largest democracy, I bring with me the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians. Ghana is known as the land of Gold, not just for what lies beneath the earth but also for the warmth and strength in your hearts."

Tribute to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah

PM Modi also paid homage to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, a prominent figure in Ghana's history, whose vision continues to inspire. He quoted Nkrumah, stating, "The forces that unite us are greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart," highlighting the importance of unity in their shared journey.

Earlier in the day, Modi received the national honor from President John Mahama, which he described as a deeply moving experience. He expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Indian populace, saying, "On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, I thank the people of Ghana for this honor."

Celebrating Democratic Values

Reflecting on the democratic spirit, PM Modi stated, "India is the mother of democracy. For us, democracy is not merely a system; it is a part of our fundamental values... India has over 2,500 political parties, 20 different parties governing various states, 22 official languages, and thousands of dialects. This diversity is why those who come to India are always welcomed with open hearts."

Notably, PM Modi's visit to Ghana marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over thirty years. He was honored with the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana by President John Dramani Mahama for his distinguished leadership and contributions on the global stage.
