Guwahati, April 1: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a groundbreaking underwater tunnel project beneath the Brahmaputra River near Gohpur, aimed at revolutionizing connectivity in the Northeast region.

During a large public rally in Behali, Biswanath, PM Modi revealed that the project, which carries an estimated cost of Rs 18,500 crore, will significantly shorten the travel distance between Gohpur and Numaligarh, heralding a new phase of seamless connectivity in the area.

He emphasized that this tunnel will not only enhance transportation but also create numerous job opportunities for the residents of Assam.

“This initiative will usher in a new era of connectivity in the Northeast and unlock economic prospects for the youth,” PM Modi stated, highlighting the strategic significance of the project.

In a subtle jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, PM Modi noted that the opposition leader is on a path to a “century of defeats,” while asserting that the BJP continues to enjoy robust public backing.

He accused the Congress party of engaging in appeasement politics and overlooking Assam’s potential, reaffirming the BJP's commitment to safeguarding indigenous communities and fostering development while honoring the state’s heritage.

Discussing welfare initiatives, the Prime Minister mentioned that over 22 lakh families in Assam have already benefited from pucca houses, with an additional 15 lakh expected to gain in the upcoming years.

He reiterated that a “double-engine government” facilitates quicker and more effective implementation of schemes.

Focusing on women's empowerment, PM Modi highlighted that approximately three lakh women in the state have become “Lakhpati Baideo,” with plans to increase this figure to 40 lakh.

He also announced an expansion of the Orunodoi scheme to include more women beneficiaries, labeling it a significant electoral promise.

Among other pledges, he stated that the BJP intends to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, asserting that the public trusts the party due to its track record of fulfilling commitments.

On agricultural matters, PM Modi noted that nearly 20 lakh farmers have benefited from the PM-Kisan scheme.

Addressing the persistent flood issues in the state, he announced an investment of Rs 18,000 crore to make Assam flood-free, which includes initiatives like deepening the Subansiri River.

Highlighting infrastructure advancements, PM Modi mentioned that the BJP has completed five bridges over the Brahmaputra in the past decade, with construction on five more currently in progress.

He also pointed out improvements in healthcare and education, noting that the number of medical colleges has risen from six to 14, with an additional 10 under construction.
