PM Modi Surpasses Indira Gandhi's Tenure: A Historic Milestone in Indian Politics

A New Record in Indian Leadership

New Delhi: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant achievement by completing 4,078 days in office, surpassing the previous record held by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served for 4,077 consecutive days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. This milestone signifies an uninterrupted tenure as India's Prime Minister.

With this achievement, PM Modi now ranks as the second longest-serving Prime Minister in India's history, following only Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation's first Prime Minister.

As he celebrates 4,078 consecutive days in office on July 25, 2025, PM Modi holds numerous historic distinctions.

He is recognized as the first Prime Minister born post-Independence, the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Congress party, and the longest-serving leader from a non-Hindi-speaking state.

Moreover, he is the only non-Congress leader to have completed two full terms and to have been re-elected twice with a majority, making him the sole non-Congress Prime Minister to achieve a majority independently in the Lok Sabha.

Additionally, PM Modi is the first sitting Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi in 1971 to return to power with a full majority.

He stands out as the only Prime Minister, alongside Jawaharlal Nehru, to win three consecutive elections as the leader of a political party in India.

Furthermore, he is the only leader in India, among all Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers, to secure six consecutive electoral victories as a party leader—three in Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012) and three in Lok Sabha elections (2014, 2019, 2024).

This achievement marks another milestone in PM Modi's nearly 24 years of leadership in a democratically elected government, whether at the state or national level.

The record for the longest unbroken tenure remains with Jawaharlal Nehru. PM Modi has matched Nehru's success in leading their respective parties to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.

Born into a humble family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Narendra Modi began his journey by assisting his father in selling tea at a railway station. He later rose through the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and subsequently the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Renowned for his grassroots connection and effective communication style, PM Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for over a decade before leading the BJP to a historic national victory in 2014. Since then, he has emerged as a prominent global leader, positioning India as a confident and assertive voice on the international stage.
