The Commonwealth Games 2026 is scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, featuring over 120 Indian athletes participating in eight able-bodied sports and five para sports, aiming to enhance India's illustrious history in this multi-sport event.
PM Modi's Remarks
During the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi remarked, "The Commonwealth Games have commenced in Glasgow, and the entire nation is rallying behind our athletes. Everyone hopes that each player excels and wins the hearts of the people."
India's Progress at CWG 2026
India had a promising day at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, with boxer Sachin Siwach advancing to the pre-quarterfinals and the women's lawn bowls team of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh continuing their unbeaten streak, edging closer to the semifinals.
Following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar's bronze medal win, Indian athletes showcased strong performances in boxing, lawn bowls, and gymnastics. However, challenges were faced in swimming and wheelchair basketball. Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu is set to kick off her competition on Sunday, as India looks to build on its momentum and increase its medal tally.
Highlighting the 'Aksharakanduka' Initiative
PM Modi also brought attention to the innovative 'Aksharakanduka' initiative in Kerala, where a teacher and a Sanskrit club are making the language accessible by associating Sanskrit letters with football terminology to enhance learning.
"I discovered a remarkable sports initiative in South Chittoor, Ernakulam, Kerala. A school there has a Sanskrit club led by Teacher Abhilash, who is creatively promoting Sanskrit through this project called 'Aksharakanduka', linking letters to football-related words for easier understanding," PM Modi noted.
