During his recent trip to Cyprus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with a traditional gesture of respect by Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa, a member of the Nicosia Council. As a sign of honor, she touched his feet while welcoming him at the historic center of the capital.

In response, PM Modi acknowledged her gesture by placing his hand on her head, smiling, and expressing appreciation for her understanding of Indian customs. While in Cyprus, he was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest honor in the country, by President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

Significance of the Order of Makarios III

The Order of Makarios III is named after the first president of Cyprus and is awarded to heads of state and distinguished individuals for their exceptional service to the nation. PM Modi expressed his gratitude to President Christodoulides and the people of Cyprus for this prestigious recognition.

He emphasized that this honor reflects the strong commitment to peace, security, and mutual prosperity between India and Cyprus. "This recognition is not solely mine; it represents the honor of 1.4 billion Indians and our shared cultural values," he stated.

Historic Visit and Diplomatic Engagement

PM Modi's visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over twenty years. He was welcomed at Larnaca International Airport by the Cypriot President. Additionally, PM Modi received a warm reception from the Indian community in Limassol and engaged with prominent CEOs during a business roundtable.
