Cultural Resonance of Vande Mataram

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to Vande Mataram as a national awakening mantra, linking it to India's freedom struggle and the cultural heritage of Bengal. His remarks followed a political controversy surrounding Vande Mataram during the winter session of Parliament. Speaking at a virtual event in Nadia, West Bengal, Modi emphasized that the song originated in Bengal and played a crucial role in igniting national consciousness. He acknowledged the song's creator, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, stating that he awakened the nation through this work.

Tribute to Bengal's Heritage

Modi also shed light on Bengal's religious and social traditions, referring to Nadia as the land of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He paid homage to social reformer Shri Harichand Thakur and Baro Ma, noting that these figures paved the way for unity and reform in society. Notably, he concluded his speech in Bengal with Vande Mataram, which deviated from his usual closing slogan, 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai.'

Critique of West Bengal Government

While discussing the Ganges River, Modi recalled his previous comments about the river flowing from Bihar to Bengal, describing it as a symbol of cultural and political connections between regions. He criticized the West Bengal government, accusing it of misgovernance and corruption. Modi claimed that development projects have stalled and accused the state administration of focusing on commissions. He asserted that the people of Bengal are calling for change, rallying behind the slogan, 'Bachhte Chaho, BJP Chaho.'
