PM Modi Extends Eid and Nowruz Greetings to Iranian President Amid Regional Tensions

Modi's Message of Peace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian via phone to convey his best wishes for Eid and Nowruz. In his message, Modi expressed a shared hope that these celebrations would usher in peace, stability, and prosperity in West Asia. He shared this sentiment on his X account, emphasizing the importance of these festivals for the region.

During their conversation, Modi condemned the recent attacks on vital infrastructure in the area, highlighting the threats they pose to regional stability and the disruption of global supply chains.

Concerns Over Maritime Security

Modi reiterated the significance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that shipping routes remain open and secure. He also acknowledged Iran's ongoing support for the safety of Indian nationals in the country. This marks the second instance of Modi communicating with the Iranian president since the onset of conflict on February 28.

In contrast, the Congress party criticized the central government's silence regarding the attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, labeling it a moral cowardice and a political betrayal of India's civilizational values.

Congress Criticism of Modi's Leadership

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that Modi has not leveraged his well-known friendships with U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to advocate for a ceasefire. Ramesh noted that it has been exactly 21 days since the commencement of airstrikes on Iran, and Modi returned from his much-publicized visit to Israel 23 days ago. He questioned whether the Modi government has condemned or expressed regret over the devastating airstrikes that have led to significant economic instability worldwide, including in India. The answer, he stated, is a resounding no.
