PM Modi Congratulates Anutin Charnvirakul
On March 20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his congratulations to Anutin Charnvirakul following his election as the Prime Minister of Thailand. Modi conveyed his eagerness to collaborate closely with Charnvirakul.
In a message shared on X, PM Modi remarked, "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul on his election as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. I am looking forward to working together to enhance the multifaceted India-Thailand Strategic Partnership. Our relationship is deeply rooted in a shared civilizational heritage, strong cultural connections, and vibrant people-to-people interactions. India and Thailand stand united in our common goals for peace, progress, and prosperity for our nations."
Modi's message followed Charnvirakul's re-election as Thailand's PM, where he achieved a simple majority in the House of Representatives vote held on Thursday.
Charnvirakul, representing the Bhumjaithai Party, secured the majority of seats in the newly elected House of Representatives, competing against Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, the leader of the People's Party, which finished second in the February elections, as reported by a news agency.
During the roll call vote, Charnvirakul garnered 293 votes, exceeding the simple majority threshold of 499 members required for approval, according to House Speaker Sophon Zaram. In contrast, Ruengpanyawut received 119 votes.
In his address, Charnvirakul assured parliament members and senators of his commitment to work collaboratively with all representatives to promote Thailand's prosperity and serve the public interest.
Charnvirakul is awaiting formal endorsement from Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn to officially begin his new term as the 32nd Prime Minister of Thailand.
He has held the position since September of the previous year, following a parliamentary vote that resulted from the Constitutional Court's decision to remove former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra due to a constitutional ethics violation.
