Prime Minister Modi's Call to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister

In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Andhra Pradesh's Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday to assess the situation and damage caused by Cyclones Arnab and Murasu in the state. The arrival of two cyclones within a week has severely impacted several regions. The Prime Minister sought updates on the current conditions in the affected areas, including loss of life and property, as well as ongoing relief and rescue operations.

Details of Damage from the Cyclones

Chief Minister Naidu provided a detailed account of the impact of both cyclones and the damage incurred across various parts of the state. He highlighted that the heavy rains and strong winds have led to significant losses for farmers. Additionally, infrastructure related to roads, electricity supply, and other essential services has also suffered damage. The Chief Minister urged the central government to provide necessary assistance to the state.

Appreciation for Relief Efforts

Prime Minister Modi commended the state government's efforts in conducting relief and rescue operations in the cyclone-affected areas. He praised Chief Minister Naidu for maintaining vigilance and addressing the challenges posed by the natural disaster. Modi also inquired about the ongoing relief efforts and the current situation in the impacted regions.

Request for Financial Assistance

Earlier, Chief Minister Naidu had written to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting immediate assistance for the state affected by the recurring cyclones. In his letter, he detailed the extensive damage to crops, properties, and public infrastructure across several districts. The natural disaster has caused various hardships for the general populace. He provided an overview of the relief and rescue operations being conducted by the state government and urged for prompt financial support from the center.

Challenges Following Cyclone Arnab

During two conversations with Home Minister Amit Shah on the same day, Chief Minister Naidu explained that the state had not fully recovered from the damage caused by Cyclone Arnab when Cyclone Murasu struck, exacerbating the situation. The continuous natural disasters have placed additional pressure on relief and rehabilitation efforts. Significant damage has been reported in the agricultural sector across multiple districts, affecting public properties and essential services.

Estimated Losses from Cyclone Murasu

According to the Chief Minister, initial estimates indicate that Cyclone Murasu has caused a loss of approximately ₹343.95 crores across eight government departments. The agricultural sector has experienced the most significant damage, accounting for nearly 94% of the total estimated losses. The state government has expedited the assessment of damages in affected areas and the distribution of relief.

Crop Damage in Affected Villages

The impact of Cyclone Murasu has devastated crops across 465 villages in seven districts, affecting around 50,473 hectares of standing crops. Approximately 69,828 farmers have been impacted by this natural disaster. The affected agricultural land included about 45,900 hectares planted with rice. Initial assessments suggest that the agricultural sector alone has incurred losses of around ₹324.22 crores.

Impact on Livelihoods

The Chief Minister noted that in the districts of Bapatla, Krishna, and Guntur, both crops and horticultural produce have suffered significant damage. The cyclone has had a widespread impact on the livelihoods of farmers in these areas. The state government is taking necessary steps to provide relief to affected farmers and others who have suffered losses.

Deployment of SDRF and NDRF Teams

In anticipation of the cyclone's potential impact, the Andhra Pradesh government had already activated disaster management protocols. The State Disaster Management Authority, Real-Time Governance Society, and emergency operation centers were placed on high alert to monitor weather conditions and respond promptly when necessary.

Relief Centers Established

For relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas, 11 teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and 13 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were on standby. These teams were deployed to assist people in emergencies, deliver relief to affected regions, and conduct necessary rescue operations.

Temporary Relief Centers Set Up

Additionally, 480 schools in cyclone-affected districts have been converted into temporary relief centers. These centers are designed to provide safe havens for affected families and ensure they receive essential services. So far, approximately 12,230 individuals have been relocated to safe locations.

Ongoing Relief and Recovery Efforts

As Andhra Pradesh grapples with the effects of two consecutive cyclones, relief, rescue, and damage assessment efforts are ongoing. The state government has requested financial assistance from the center, while both the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister have engaged with the Chief Minister to gather information about the situation in the affected areas. The state now faces the challenge of compensating farmers for their losses, restoring damaged infrastructure, and providing relief to affected families.
