PM Modi Directs Action Plan Amidst Middle East Conflict Impacting Oil and Gas Imports
Strategic Measures for Oil and Gas Supply
In light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East affecting oil and gas imports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed the formation of a dedicated group of ministers and secretaries. This team will focus on all aspects from importation to domestic supply. During a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, PM Modi emphasized that all government departments should implement measures to minimize public inconvenience during this challenging period. Discussions also included strategies for importing essential items for the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and other industrial sectors from regions outside the Middle East. Additionally, the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on exports was addressed, with brainstorming on how to enhance exports from alternative locations. Coordinated actions were urged to prevent hoarding and black marketing of essential goods.
Accelerating PNG Applications
The government has expedited efforts to improve gas distribution and alleviate supply pressures. This includes a directive to fast-track applications for pipeline gas projects (CNG/PNG) in urban areas. There has also been an instruction to increase the supply of commercial LPG.
Arrival of Oil and Gas Vessels
A vessel carrying LPG from the United States has arrived at the New Mangalore Port. This ship, which departed from the Netherlands in Texas, docked on Sunday morning. Additionally, a tanker carrying Russian crude oil, originally destined for China, altered its route to head towards India. This vessel is named 'Aqua Titan'.
Meeting with Senior Ministers
PM Modi held another meeting with senior ministers, including Hardeep Singh Puri (Minister of Oil and Gas), Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Minister of Agriculture), JP Nadda (Minister of Health), Piyush Goyal (Minister of Commerce and Industry), Prahlad Joshi (Minister of Consumer Affairs), and Ashwini Vaishnaw (Minister of Railways). Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu were also consulted. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the Prime Minister's principal secretaries, PK Mishra and Shaktikanta Das, were present at the meeting.
Cabinet Secretary's Briefing
During the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary provided PM Modi with insights into the global situation and strategies to address it. He detailed actions taken across various sectors, including agriculture, fertilizers, food security, petroleum, electricity, MSME exporters, finance, and supply chains. An assessment of food products and petroleum products was also conducted.
