PM Modi Critiques TMC for Messi Event Mismanagement
PM Modi Criticizes TMC for 'Maha Jungle Raj'
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his discontent with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the organization of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi's visit to Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium last year. He blamed the TMC for what he termed the 'Maha Jungle Raj,' asserting that the party has harmed the sports culture in the state. Modi stated, 'The TMC syndicate has ruined the sports ecosystem here. The recent events in Kolkata, which were broadcast to football fans globally, are a direct result of this mismanagement. I promise the athletes of Bengal that a new sports ecosystem will be established under the 'Khelo India' initiative, and the BJP will revitalize Bengal's sports culture.'
Disorder at Kolkata Event
The situation turned chaotic during Messi's appearance in Kolkata, which marked the beginning of the GOAT India Tour 2025. Fans reported that VIPs and politicians obstructed the pitch, hindering spectators from seeing the football star. Frustrated fans reacted by vandalizing parts of the stadium, blaming the organizers for inadequate planning and execution.
Resignation of Sports Minister
In the wake of the turmoil during Messi's event, West Bengal's Sports Minister Aroop Biswas stepped down from his position. His resignation was accepted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Messi Concludes India Tour
Following the Kolkata event, Messi continued his tour across India, visiting cities such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi, before concluding his journey at the Vantara animal sanctuary in Jamnagar.
