PM Modi Criticizes TMC Over RG Kar Rape-Murder Case
Prime Minister Modi's Strong Condemnation of TMC
In a pointed attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the RG Kar rape and murder case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the victim's mother worked tirelessly to help her daughter become a doctor, only to lose her in the TMC's reign of terror. Speaking at an election rally in Dum Dum alongside the victim's mother, PM Modi asserted that the TMC has failed to protect women and has instead suppressed their demands for justice. He highlighted the mother's efforts in supporting her daughter’s medical aspirations, which were tragically cut short by the TMC's negligence. The BJP has nominated Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar rape victim, to contest in the Bengal elections from her hometown, Panihati. She was present on stage with the Prime Minister during the rally. The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found deceased on August 9, 2024, in the seminar hall of the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Public Outrage and Arrests Following the Incident
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the nation, leading to the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata police, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The post-mortem report confirmed that the victim was raped, strangled, and subsequently murdered. Protests in Bengal have escalated into significant accusations against the Mamata Banerjee government regarding its handling of law and order. It appears that PM Modi's remarks were reflective of this sentiment as he criticized the TMC.
Allegations Against TMC and Upcoming Elections
The Prime Minister also referenced the incidents in Sandeshkhali, which drew attention due to land grabbing and sexual harassment allegations, stating that the BJP has provided leadership opportunities to the victims there. He accused the TMC, which is seeking a fourth consecutive term, of silencing women. In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has given a ticket to Rekha Patra, one of the victims from Sandeshkhali, to contest from Bashirhat in West Bengal, although she ultimately lost the election. PM Modi further remarked that when the daughters of Bengal seek justice, the TMC advises them to stay indoors to avoid rape, indicating that the party does not want women to aspire for their dreams.
