On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who raised concerns about an inaccurate map of India displayed at a Glasgow restaurant during the 2026 Commonwealth Games. During a meeting with India's medal winners at his residence, Borgohain shared her experiences from the Games, emphasizing the nation's remarkable achievements in boxing.
PM Modi Celebrates Lovlina's Nationalistic Gesture
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, PM Modi highlighted Lovlina's patriotic spirit, recalling a specific moment from the Games where she demonstrated her pride for India. He inquired about an incident involving the restaurant staff during her visit. The issue of the distorted map was brought to light after Lovlina addressed it during her time at the eatery in Glasgow.
"What transpired? Did you have a disagreement with the restaurant staff?" PM Modi asked. Lovlina recounted that after a successful final day of competition, where numerous athletes secured medals, she felt compelled to address the situation.
"Our performance was outstanding, and it was the last day. Everyone had won, and there were many Indians present. I felt a bit upset about the situation, so I firmly requested a change, sir. They agreed, and now things have improved," Lovlina explained.
A Moment of National Pride
PM Modi praised Lovlina's actions, stating that they reflect a profound sense of national pride among athletes that transcends mere medal victories. "In that moment of triumph—celebration, joy, and camaraderie with teammates after the games—seeing that map and acknowledging it... the love for the country runs deep, not just on the surface when receiving a medal. This video of yours is remarkable. It will be remembered for a long time," PM Modi remarked.
India's Boxing Triumph
Commending the performance of Indian boxers at the Games, PM Modi remarked, "Now athletes from around the globe are becoming wary of these boxers!" Lovlina responded by affirming that Indian boxers have made a significant impact with their consistent performances. "Absolutely, everyone was intimidated. Gold medals were coming in one after another. It was a spectacular finish. The support we receive and the consecutive competitions we participate in are crucial factors," she stated.
The Olympic medalist also acknowledged the Khelo India initiative for nurturing young athletes and enhancing India's sports ecosystem. "Many of our emerging athletes have come through the Khelo India program, which is driving significant change across all sports," Lovlina added.

India made history in boxing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, leading the medal tally with seven gold and three silver medals. This 10-medal achievement marks India's best-ever performance in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, surpassing the previous record of six gold medals held jointly by England (1934 and 2018) and Canada (1986).
Overall Performance and Future Prospects
India concluded its Commonwealth Games journey in Glasgow with a total of 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze, securing fourth place in the overall medal standings. The Games wrapped up after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which is set to host the centenary edition of the multi-sport event in Ahmedabad in 2030.
