Recognition for Saji Valasseril

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the remarkable contributions of Saji Valasseril, a swimming instructor from Kerala, during the 134th episode of his monthly radio program 'Mann Ki Baat'. Valasseril, who operates a swimming club in Aluva, has dedicated his efforts to teaching swimming and ensuring water safety, impacting the lives of thousands, including children with disabilities.

Innovative 'River School'

PM Modi introduced the concept of a unique 'River School' during his address, describing it as a place where children of all ages can learn without the constraints of traditional classrooms. He emphasized that this school, located in the Aluva area of Ernakulam district, has successfully taught over 15,000 individuals how to swim, including those with special needs.

A Mission Inspired by Tragedy

The Prime Minister shared that Valasseril's commitment to swimming education stemmed from a personal tragedy involving a boat accident that claimed the lives of several students. This heartbreaking event motivated him to promote swimming skills, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Comprehensive Training Approach

For over 15 years, Valasseril has organized swimming camps at Desham, near Aluva Manappuram, running from November to May. These camps cater to various age groups and focus on essential swimming and water survival techniques. The training follows a structured five-point syllabus that includes floating, kicking, submerged swimming, breathing methods, and periodic head lifting for breath control.

To ensure safety, rescue boats and ambulances are on standby during training sessions, with participants contributing a nominal fee of Rs 100 for safety measures.

Valasseril's Impact on Society

PM Modi highlighted that Valasseril's journey exemplifies how impactful social service can be achieved without extensive resources. He stated, "Saji Valasseril's life imparts a vital lesson: meaningful service stems from good intentions and persistent efforts, which can transform countless lives."

Valasseril's initiatives have not only equipped many with vital swimming skills but have also raised awareness about water safety and drowning prevention in the community.
