Prime Minister Modi Commends Athletes

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for athletes Gulveer Singh and Unnati Sharma, who both secured bronze medals in athletics and judo, respectively, during the Commonwealth Games 2026.


Gulveer Singh's Historic Achievement

In a message shared on X, PM Modi congratulated Gulveer Singh for his remarkable bronze medal win in the men's 5000m event. He stated, "Gulveer Singh has made history! Winning the Bronze Medal in the Men's 5000m at the Commonwealth Games 2026 is a significant achievement. He is the first Indian to earn two athletics medals in a single Commonwealth Games and the first to medal in the Men's 5000m event. This is a monumental milestone for Indian athletics. Best wishes to him!"


Gulveer's bronze in the 5000m followed his earlier success in the men's 10,000m event, marking him as the first Indian athlete to achieve two athletics medals at one Commonwealth Games.


Recognition for Unnati Sharma

The Prime Minister also praised judoka Unnati Sharma for her bronze medal in the women's 63kg category. He remarked, "India shines in Judo! Congratulations to Unnati Sharma for her Bronze Medal in the Women's 63kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Her dedication and determination were evident throughout the competition. Wishing her continued success in her future endeavors!"


India's Medal Success on Saturday

India had a fruitful day at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Saturday, with athletes from boxing, athletics, para athletics, and judo contributing to the medal tally. Indian boxers excelled, securing seven gold and three silver medals.


In para athletics, Soman Rana clinched gold while Shubham Juyal took silver in the men's F57 shot put event.


Athletics also yielded two medals for India, with Praveen Chithravel winning silver and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran earning bronze in the men's triple jump.


Mixed Results for Other Athletes

Other Indian athletes experienced varied outcomes across different events. Karanjit Singh Maan and Inunganbi Takhellambam were eliminated in their respective judo repechage matches, while track cyclists David Beckham, Ronaldo Singh, and Rojit Singh did not advance in the men's sprint qualification.


In para athletics, Ramesh Shanmugam placed seventh in the men's 1500m T54, and Priyanka Goswami finished fourth in the women's 10,000m race walk, with Ravina Gayakwad being disqualified.


Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh Sekhon did not complete the men's 10km scratch race qualifying event, and the men's pairs team of Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar was eliminated by England in bowls.


Nayanmoni Saikia exited the women's singles sectional play after a loss to South Africa's Bridget Herselman.


In athletics, Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar did not secure medals in the men's pole vault final, while the Indian mixed 4x400m relay team, consisting of Vishal TK, Rajesh Ramesh, Rashdeep Kaur, and Neeru Pathak, finished in sixth place.


India's Impressive Medal Count

As the Commonwealth Games 2026 approaches its final day, India boasts an impressive total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze.
