Prime Minister Modi's Address to the Nation
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a significant address to the nation, focusing on the concerns of mothers and sisters across the country. He expressed his desire to speak directly to women, stating that the opposition has hindered the empowerment of women. Modi also extended an apology to the women of India, acknowledging the failure to achieve success in their efforts.
He emphasized that he was present to address the mothers, sisters, and daughters of the nation, lamenting the inability to pass the Women's Reservation Bill. With a heavy heart, he conveyed his sincere apologies to the women of India.
Criticism of Opposition Parties
The Prime Minister did not hold back in criticizing opposition parties, accusing them of obstructing the bill. He attributed the failure of the legislation to the self-serving politics of various parties, including Congress, TMC, DMK, and SP. Modi condemned the opposition for prioritizing political interests over public welfare, stating that their narrow-minded politics has adversely affected the mothers and sisters of the nation. He further claimed that some opposition groups celebrated the bill's failure, pointing out that dynastic parties were applauding its downfall.
Allegations Against Opposition's Treatment of Women
Modi intensified his critique of the opposition regarding the Women's Reservation Bill, accusing them of undermining women's dignity and rights. He stated that the opposition has disrespected women's self-esteem and that by denying them their rightful opportunities, they are essentially praising themselves. He asserted that women may forget many things, but they will never forget the disrespect they have faced.
He remarked that parties like Congress, DMK, TMC, and SP were celebrating while stripping women of their rights, and their actions were not merely applause but an attack on women's pride and self-respect. Modi emphasized that the behavior of Congress and its allies in Parliament would leave a lasting impact on every woman.
Details of the Women's Reservation Bill
The proposed bill aimed to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to 816 based on the 2011 census, ensuring the implementation of the Women's Reservation Law before the 2029 parliamentary elections. Additionally, it sought to include a 33% reservation for women in the assemblies of states and union territories. To pass this crucial bill, a two-thirds majority was required, but the ruling BJP-led coalition failed to secure the necessary votes. During the voting in the Lok Sabha on Friday night, 298 members supported the bill, while 230 opposed it. Out of 528 members who voted, the bill needed 352 votes for a two-thirds majority.
