Goyal Responds to Gandhi's Claims

Union Minister Piyush Goyal has rejected the accusations made by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi regarding police actions during a protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20. Speaking to reporters in Jaipur on August 6, Goyal asserted that the situation was managed appropriately and emphasized that no wrongdoing occurred. He remarked that Gandhi is not taken seriously by anyone and reiterated that the situation was handled correctly without any misconduct.

Context of the Allegations

Goyal's remarks came a day after Gandhi accused the central government of attempting to suppress democratic dissent following his meeting with protesters highlighting alleged irregularities in NEET and other competitive exams. During his interaction with the demonstrators, Gandhi mentioned that they faced police brutality and harassment, referencing reports of a minor girl being pressured to apologize.

Gandhi's Criticism of Government Actions

Gandhi stated that pressuring individuals, sending goons to their homes, and coercing a 15-year-old girl into making an apology, only to accept it later, is completely unacceptable. He expressed a desire for a functional education system, a halt to exam paper leaks, and respect for the future of the country. He also criticized the government's handling of the protests, alleging that peaceful demonstrators were assaulted.

Call for Educational Reform

He further asserted that complaining about a failing and ineffective education system is not a crime, emphasizing the need for reform. The protesters were merely voicing their demands without resorting to violence or aggression, yet they were met with violence and intimidation. Gandhi specifically targeted Home Minister Amit Shah, holding him accountable for the police's actions.
