In a gripping encounter at the Global Chess League (GCL) held in Bengaluru, world number one Magnus Carlsen halted the impressive three-game winning streak of Candidates 2026 champion Javokhir Sindarov. Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi secured a victory against Daniil Dubov in a challenging rook-knight endgame, leading the defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers, to a 9-7 victory over FYERS American Gambits.
Both teams entered the ninth round tied on match and game points, making this win crucial for their chances of reaching the finals, as highlighted in a GCL press release.
Carlsen, awarded Player of the Match, maintained dominance against Sindarov, compelling the Uzbek player to resign after 36 moves. "This was an excellent match with a strong team effort. We are excited about the win. I felt confident early on, but Sindarov fought hard. I managed to find a way to win," Carlsen remarked, later presenting the trophy to Vidit, whom he believed deserved it more.
The match between Vidit and Dubov turned into a tense time scramble, but Vidit remained composed, leveraging an extra knight and pawn against Dubov's rook to secure victory after an intense 96 moves, completing a double win over the Gambits.
Divya Deshmukh, the Women's World Cup champion, faced challenges in her GCL debut, running out of time on move 34 against Bibisara Assaubayeva, marking her team's only loss on that day. "It was a tight match, and I felt I played well, but we weren't in a strong position to win. I'm glad my win helped the team," Vidit added.
Continental Kings Outshine Alaskan Knights
In a match featuring two teams at the bottom of the standings, the two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings showcased their strength against the PBG Alaskan Knights.
On the Superstar women's boards, Zhu Jiner achieved her first tournament victory by defeating Kateryna Lagno in 44 moves. Alexandra Kosteniuk capitalized on a mistake from Nino Batsiashvili, while Pranav Venkatesh forced Abhimanyu Mishra to resign after 42 moves on the prodigy board.
