Pinki Jangra Advocates for Women's Empowerment Through Nari Shakti Vandan Bill
Celebrating Fitness and Gender Equality
During a day dedicated to fitness and national advancement, Pinki Jangra, a bronze medalist from the 2014 Commonwealth Games, expressed her support for the government's initiative regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. She described this legislation as a significant step towards combating gender inequality. At the 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' event, Jangra connected India's achievements in sports to the potential of women in legislative roles, emphasizing that 'equality and opportunity' are crucial for national empowerment.
Overview of the Women's Reservation Bill Amendment
The government is set to amend the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, commonly known as the Women's Reservation Bill, which seeks to separate women's quotas from the delimitation process. This bill was enacted in 2023.
A separate Delimitation Bill will also be proposed. Both pieces of legislation must be approved as Constitutional amendments to ensure women's reservation. The upcoming Lok Sabha is expected to expand to over 800 seats, with a special parliamentary session scheduled from April 16 to discuss the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill. Two significant amendments are planned.
The 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Act links women's reservation to the latest census and delimitation. Due to delays in the census, the government intends to utilize data from the 2011 census for delimitation and seat allocation.
The number of Lok Sabha seats may increase from 543 to 816 following the amendments.
A bill will be introduced in Parliament to modify the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, alongside a separate Delimitation Bill. Both must be passed as Constitutional amendments for women's reservation.
The new Lok Sabha is projected to exceed 800 seats.
In maintaining existing policies, there will be no provisions for OBC reservations, while SC/ST reservations will persist. States will not have a say; the legislation passed by Parliament will be applicable to them.
Currently, the Lok Sabha comprises 543 seats. With a proposed 50% increase, the total will rise to 816, with 273 seats (approximately one-third) allocated for women.
Linking Sports Achievements to Political Representation
Jangra highlighted the recent Asian Boxing Championships 2026 as evidence of the benefits of providing women with opportunities. India secured second place overall, earning 16 medals, while the women's team excelled, achieving a remarkable tally of 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals.
'India's boxing is thriving, and our recent performance in the Asian Championships was outstanding. We achieved multiple medals, indicating a bright future for boxing in India,' she remarked.
Anticipating a Significant Democratic Change
As the April 16 session nears, attention is focused on the smooth passage of the two necessary Constitutional amendments. If successful, this initiative could not only transform the structure of the Indian Parliament but also significantly impact the gender dynamics within Indian democracy—a change that Jangra believes is long overdue.
