Peter Thiel Critiques Pope Leo XIV's AI Regulation Views

Tech billionaire Peter Thiel has sparked controversy by criticizing Pope Leo XIV's views on artificial intelligence, suggesting they inadvertently support the Chinese Communist Party. Speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Thiel argued that the pope's call for strict AI regulations puts the U.S. at a disadvantage in the global tech race. He has also expressed concerns about a socialist shift within the Democratic Party and hinted at his strategic relocations, including a foothold in Argentina. Thiel's remarks reflect a broader pattern of harsh language towards AI critics, raising questions about his influence in political and religious circles.

Thiel's Controversial Remarks on AI and the Pope

Peter Thiel, the tech mogul, has expressed a stark opinion regarding Pope Leo XIV's perspective on artificial intelligence, suggesting that the pontiff is unwittingly aiding the Chinese Communist Party. During his address at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado, Thiel criticized the pope's recent 42,000-word encyclical that advocates for stringent AI regulations, labeling the technology as a potential catalyst for global "dehumanization." According to Thiel, this mindset places the United States at a significant disadvantage in the international competition to advance AI technology, while China continues to progress without hesitation. He believes that those advocating for a slowdown in AI development are effectively granting China an upper hand, leading him to assert that the pope is "serving the interests of the Chinese communists."

Thiel's Ongoing Critique of AI Opponents

This statement is not an isolated incident for Thiel. The co-founder of PayPal and Palantir has been vocal over the past year, labeling critics of AI development in extreme terms, even suggesting they act as agents of the Antichrist. Journalist Christopher Hale, who authors the Letters From Leo newsletter, remarked that Thiel has even proposed that Pope Leo could be seen as a representation of the Antichrist.

JD Vance's Connection to Thiel

The narrative becomes more complex with the involvement of JD Vance. Thiel was a significant financial supporter of Vance's Senate campaign in 2022 and has been a long-time political ally. He is also credited with influencing Vance's conversion to Catholicism. However, Hale noted that Thiel has advised affluent audiences to disregard the moral teachings of the faith he helped Vance embrace, stating, "Thiel seeded the vice president's Catholic faith," while now claiming that the pope is aligned with a communist regime.

Concerns Over the Democratic Party's Direction

During his appearance at Aspen, Thiel also voiced concerns regarding what he perceives as a democratic socialist shift within the Democratic Party, referencing recent primary victories by candidates supported by the Democratic Socialists of America in states like New York and Colorado. He did not hold back in expressing his views, stating, "When the Democratic Party goes, this country is over," and asserting that a socialist takeover is already in progress.

Thiel's Strategic Moves Amidst Concerns

Thiel's apprehensions about the future of America seem to be influencing more than just his public statements. Reports from The New York Times in May indicated that he has established a presence in Argentina, which is currently led by libertarian President Javier Milei. This aligns with a broader trend; Thiel, who was born in Germany and raised in the U.S., acquired New Zealand citizenship in 2011 and applied for a Maltese passport in 2022. Argentina may be emerging as yet another contingency plan for the billionaire.
