Pet Abandonment Rises Amid UAE Crisis Following Iranian Drone Strikes
Increasing Pet Abandonment in the UAE
As the crisis in the Middle East intensifies, reports indicate a troubling trend of pet abandonment in the UAE, particularly in Dubai, following Iranian drone strikes. Many residents are fleeing the city, with some leaving their pets outside shelters or seeking assistance from volunteers for their care.
A report from a British radio station highlighted that veterinarians and animal rescue organizations in the UAE are experiencing an influx of requests related to pets. Disturbingly, some pet owners are reportedly asking veterinarians to euthanize their animals in light of the recent attacks.
Many individuals are attempting to cross into Oman, leading to an increase in dogs being released by their owners. Claire Hopkins, a British volunteer involved in dog rescue efforts in the UAE, shared her observations of widespread panic and distress among those preparing to leave. She noted that many people are abandoning their adopted pets due to a lack of travel arrangements.
Hopkins expressed her dismay at the reports of veterinarians receiving inquiries about euthanizing pets, emphasizing the growing challenges as animal shelters are already at capacity while the number of abandoned animals continues to rise.
In related news, Dubai International Airport, recognized as the busiest airport globally for international passenger traffic, suspended operations on March 7, 2026. The airport later announced via its official social media account that some flights had partially resumed from both DXB and Al Maktoum International Airport. Passengers were advised to avoid traveling to the airport unless their flight was confirmed, as schedules remain unpredictable.
