Pentagon and Vatican Officials Discuss Rising Global Tensions
Meeting Amidst Global Strain
In January, senior Pentagon officials reportedly engaged in a private discussion with a Vatican representative as tensions escalated with Pope Leo XIV. This meeting allegedly followed the pope's address, which criticized the influence of global power dynamics and the reliance on military force in international affairs.
According to sources from The Free Press and The Letters from Leo, Elbridge Colby, the US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, met with Cardinal Christophe Pierre shortly after the pope's 'State of the World' speech. In his address, the pope denounced diplomacy that relies on military might, imperialism, and the quest for dominance.
During their conversation, US officials purportedly conveyed a firm message, asserting that the United States possesses the military capability to operate freely worldwide and suggested that the Catholic Church should align with its stance. They reportedly stated, 'America has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world. The Catholic Church had better take its side.'
These assertions remain unverified, and neither the Vatican nor the US government has publicly commented on the matter. The meeting occurred in the wake of the pope's critical remarks regarding the trajectory of global politics, particularly amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Furthermore, it is suggested that this incident may have jeopardized plans for a potential papal visit to the United States, which was anticipated to coincide with the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations. Following the reported discussions, those plans seem to have fallen through.
In addition, tensions heightened after the pope adopted a firmer position on the ongoing conflict in Iran. Initially advocating for restraint and dialogue, he later condemned threats of violence.
Papal Condemnation of Violence
What Did Pope Say?
Recently, the pope condemned threats directed at civilians in Iran, responding to US President Donald Trump's warnings of severe repercussions in the region. He emphasized that any threat against an entire population is intolerable.
The pope urged individuals to engage with their political leaders, advocating for peace rather than conflict. He highlighted economic challenges, escalating energy issues, and instability in the Middle East, warning that these factors could exacerbate hatred and suffering globally.
He stated, 'Let’s remember especially the innocent children, the elderly, the sick, so many people who have already become or will become victims of this continued warfare.' He called on leaders to resume dialogue and prevent further hostilities, reminding them of the vulnerable populations that often bear the brunt of war.
As of now, the reports regarding the Pentagon meeting remain unverified.
