PCB Fines Players for T20 World Cup Disappointment

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has levied a substantial fine of PKR 5 million (around US$ 18,000) on each player of the national team due to their unsatisfactory performance in the T20 World Cup 2026. This action follows Pakistan's premature exit from the tournament, marking the first time in their cricketing history that they have failed to reach the semi-finals in four consecutive ICC events.

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, these fines are not a result of disciplinary issues but are specifically related to what the PCB considers a lackluster performance during the tournament. The fines were announced right after Pakistan's group stage match against India, where they suffered a significant 61-run defeat. The board indicated that these fines could be rescinded if the team managed to reach the semi-finals.

Pakistan's journey in the T20 World Cup included a washed-out match against New Zealand and a loss to England. Their hopes of advancing were dashed after New Zealand's decisive victory over Sri Lanka, leaving Pakistan needing a substantial win against Sri Lanka to qualify. Unfortunately, their victory was too narrow to secure a place in the final four.

PCB's History of Disciplinary Actions

The PCB has a history of imposing penalties following disappointing performances in major tournaments. For instance, last year, the board suspended all No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players wishing to participate in overseas T20 leagues.

This decision was announced by PCB Chief Operating Officer Sumair Ahmad Syed on September 29, following Pakistan's close defeat to India in the Asia Cup 2025 final.
