Pawan Sehrawat's Pride in Flag-Bearing Role

Indian kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat expressed his excitement after being named the male flag-bearer for the opening ceremony of the Asian Games. Despite feeling fatigued from training and lack of sleep, he feels invigorated by the honor of carrying the national flag. On Saturday, he was selected to take over the role from two-time Asian Games gold medalist Tajinderpal Singh Toor due to technical difficulties, joining double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker in this prestigious duty.

Sehrawat, who clinched gold at the 2022 Asian Games, described the experience of holding the national flag as a moment of 'immense pride.' He shared that even after a long day of training, the thought of representing his country keeps him energized. 'It feels surreal to have this opportunity,' he remarked.

Memories of Past Asian Games

Reflecting on his past experiences, Pawan recalled the 2014 Asian Games when India triumphed over Iran in the final. He remembered the bravery of Rakesh Kumar, who returned to the match after a head injury. 'I was young then, but that moment inspired me to dream of winning gold and hearing our national anthem play,' he said, noting that he fulfilled that dream in 2022 and aims to do so again in 2026.

Sharing the Honor with Manu Bhaker

Pawan expressed his enthusiasm about sharing the flag-bearing honor with Manu Bhaker, an accomplished Olympian. 'It’s a proud moment to stand alongside her,' he stated, highlighting her motivational presence within the team. Their collaboration symbolizes the unity of male and female athletes representing India on an international stage.

Leading India's Kabaddi Team

Manu Bhaker, who made history by winning two bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will compete in multiple shooting events. Meanwhile, Pawan, stepping in for Tajinderpal Singh Toor, aims to lead the Indian men's kabaddi team to another gold medal. India has a remarkable record in this sport, having secured gold in eight out of nine editions since its introduction in 1990, with the exception of a bronze in 2018. In the last Asian Games held in Hangzhou, India defeated Iran 33-29 to claim the gold.
