Committee's Focus on Student Concerns

The chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports, Digvijay Singh, announced on Tuesday that the committee will address concerns raised by students regarding the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. This decision follows a presentation made by Class 12 student Sarthak Siddhant. The committee is currently examining the implementation of the OSM system in CBSE's Class 12 examinations, along with issues related to evaluation processes and transparency.

After the committee meeting, Singh spoke to reporters, confirming that Siddhant had presented his case before the committee. He emphasized that the committee would consider both the issues raised and the responses provided by CBSE. Singh noted that the student had successfully delivered his presentation, and it is the committee's responsibility to evaluate the responses from CBSE. Highlighting the committee's commitment to student welfare, Singh assured that all suggestions and concerns presented would be thoroughly examined.

Singh further stated, "I can only say that the entire committee is concerned and will consider whatever is feasible, keeping in mind the interests and situations of the students." He reiterated that the committee has consistently focused on issues related to students and their challenges. When asked about the timeline for the committee's report, Singh explained that the process involves drafting a report and presenting it for discussion within the committee before finalizing it.

Earlier in the day, Siddhant appeared before the committee in the Parliament building, highlighting alleged irregularities in the CBSE's OSM tender process. The student claimed that changes to the tender conditions regarding performance standards, blacklisting provisions, and eligibility criteria seemed to favor a specific service provider. He also advocated for greater transparency in educational procurement systems and suggested that a comprehensive pilot test of the OSM system should be conducted before large-scale implementation.
