Parliament Concludes Winter Session

On Friday, Parliament was adjourned indefinitely, marking the end of the winter session. Unlike previous sessions characterized by frequent adjournments and walkouts, this session saw continuous debates, allowing the government to successfully pass several significant laws. Bills aimed at increasing private and foreign participation in the insurance and nuclear sectors, improving rural employment, and approving new financial and taxation measures were passed in both houses of Parliament. Over the course of more than 19 sessions, eight major laws were approved after extensive discussions regarding their economic, social, and strategic implications.


Key Legislation Passed

Among the most notable were the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill, 2025 (SHANTI Bill), which opens the nuclear sector to private participation; the Developed India Village Employment and Human Dignity Bill, 2025 (VB G-RAM-G Bill), which replaces MGNREGA; and the Universal Insurance for All (Amendment to Insurance Laws) Bill, 2025, which increases foreign direct investment in the insurance sector up to 100%.


Discussion on Delhi Pollution Delayed

The anticipated discussion on deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR, scheduled for the last day of the winter session in the Lok Sabha, has been postponed due to the indefinite adjournment of both houses.

Rajya Sabha Productivity

The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned indefinitely on Friday, with a productivity rate of 121% during this session. Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan expressed gratitude to the Deputy Chairman Harivansh, members, and staff for their cooperation in conducting the proceedings. This session marked Radhakrishnan's first as Chairman, and he announced the adjournment following the rendition of the Vande Mataram tune. The winter session commenced on December 1, and Radhakrishnan was elected as the 15th Vice President of the country in September, automatically becoming the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.


Lok Sabha Session Summary

The Lok Sabha was adjourned indefinitely on Friday, concluding the 19-day winter session of Parliament. During this brief session, which included 15 meetings, several important bills were passed, including one that opens the civil nuclear sector to private companies. Another bill, the VB-G RAM G Bill, which guarantees 125 days of employment for rural India, was passed amid opposition protests, including incidents of paper tearing. The session also featured two debates on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and electoral reforms, showcasing a politically charged atmosphere.
