Parliamentary Proceedings Halted
Following the tribute to former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were suspended for the day on Monday. A moment of silence was observed as the session commenced. Meanwhile, opposition members continued to create a ruckus in the Lok Sabha over the ongoing special intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar, similar to the disruptions seen in recent days. The Lok Sabha reconvened briefly at 2 PM, but as the government attempted to introduce the National Sports Administration Bill, 2025, opposition members persisted in their protests, leading to the adjournment of the day's proceedings.
Government's Response to Protests
In response to the uproar from opposition MPs, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed his disappointment with the state of the house. He noted that all parties had previously agreed to discuss and pass the National Sports Administration Bill and the National Anti-Doping Amendment Bill. He mentioned that, at the opposition's request, two days had been allocated for discussions on these bills. However, with the introduction of such crucial legislation for athletes, the opposition was causing disruptions. He emphasized that the Sports Minister was also ready for discussions and criticized the opposition for wasting the house's time.
Job Creation Under Modi's Government
- On Monday, Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed the Lok Sabha that over 17 million jobs had been created for youth during the ten years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He also mentioned plans to generate over four million jobs under the Developed India Employment Scheme over the next five years. This information was shared during the question hour in response to a supplementary question from Samajwadi Party MP Ruchi Veera.
Chairman's Remarks on Disruptions
- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the protesting opposition members, stating that shouting slogans, waving placards, and attempting to damage government property were inappropriate actions. He remarked that the public was observing how the proceedings of the house were being systematically disrupted.
Tribute to Shibu Soren
- Upon the commencement of the upper house meeting, Deputy Chairman Harivansh acknowledged Soren's passing, noting that he was born on May 11, 1944, in Nimra village of Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand, and completed his education at Gola High School. He described Soren as a well-known tribal leader and a farmer by profession, who was popularly known as 'Guruji' among the common people. Harivansh highlighted Soren's significant role as a grassroots activist in the movement for the state of Jharkhand.
