Renaming of the Airport

The Palm Beach International Airport in Florida has been officially renamed to honor former US President Donald J. Trump. As of July 9, the airport will now be referred to as "The President Donald J. Trump International Airport." This change followed the signing of legislation by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in March, which authorized the renaming.

Trump expressed his gratitude for the honor, calling it a "very big day" for Palm Beach. He shared his excitement on Truth Social, stating, "A very big day in Palm Beach, Florida, where it was my Great Honor to have the Palm Beach International Airport be renamed, by a spectacular vote, The President Donald J. Trump International Airport." He also highlighted the airport's prime location and announced plans for significant renovations, stating, "The Area is HOT, the Location is GREAT, and the Renovation will be SPECTACULAR," while thanking the local residents for their support.

The announcement was made by Sean Duffy, Secretary of the US Department of Transportation, who welcomed everyone to the newly named airport via a tweet.

Changes to Airport Code

As reported by Reuters, the Federal Aviation Administration has updated the airport's three-letter identifier code from PBI to DJT. However, travelers will still need to use PBI for flight bookings until August 18, when the new code will be implemented on tickets, baggage tags, and airline reservation systems. The renaming process incurred a cost of approximately $5.5 million.

This renaming is not unprecedented, as other US airports have previously been named after political figures, such as Little Rock, Arkansas, which honors former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, while retaining the LIT airport code. Other airports have also been renamed in honor of former lawmakers in cities like Las Vegas and San Jose, California.
