Pakistan's T20 World Cup Boycott: BCCI Responds to Shehbaz Sharif's Statement
BCCI's Stance on Pakistan's Boycott
In response to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's announcement regarding the country's decision to abstain from the ICC T20 World Cup match against India, Rajeev Shukla, Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stated that the board will adhere to the directives of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Shukla remarked, "The BCCI has no comments on Shehbaz's declaration. The ICC will make the final decision, and we will comply with whatever they decide."
Pakistan's Official Position
During a cabinet meeting in Islamabad, Prime Minister Sharif reiterated Pakistan's firm decision to boycott the T20 World Cup match scheduled for February 15 in Sri Lanka. He emphasized that the country has taken a "clear stand" on this issue.
Sharif explained that the decision was made after thorough consideration, asserting, "There should be no politics in sports. We have deliberated carefully and believe this is the right course of action."
ICC's Reaction to Pakistan's Decision
Following the announcement from the Pakistan government, the ICC released a statement expressing that "selective participation" undermines the essence of a global sporting event. They expect the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to seek a resolution that serves the interests of all parties involved.
The ICC noted that they are awaiting formal communication from the PCB regarding this selective participation stance, which contradicts the fundamental principles of fair competition expected in global events.
Historical Context: Bangladesh's Withdrawal
Last month, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi briefed Prime Minister Sharif about the ICC's decision after Bangladesh opted not to send its team to India due to alleged security concerns.
The ICC subsequently announced that Scotland would replace Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2026, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) declined to participate based on the match schedule, despite the ICC's assurance of safety.
