Hesson Discusses Player Testing Before World Cup

Mike Hesson, the head coach of Pakistan, views the upcoming ODI series against Australia as a vital chance to evaluate the players' capabilities in preparation for the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2026. This three-match series is set to take place from May 30 to June 4 in Rawalpindi and Lahore. On Friday, Pakistan announced a squad of 16 players, led by fast bowler Shaheen Afridi. The team welcomes back several key players, including Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and Sufyan Moqim, who were absent during the ODI series against Bangladesh in March. The squad also features three uncapped players: Ahmed Daniyal, Arafat Minhas, and Rohail Nazir. However, Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub are still sidelined due to injuries and will not participate.

Assessing the Challenge Ahead

Hesson emphasized that the ODI series will serve as a significant challenge, highlighting Australia's motivation and strength in the ODI format compared to T20. He stated, "They'll face an Australian team eager to improve after their previous performance here. Their squad appears robust, and they excel in ODI cricket, which is currently one of their stronger formats."

Developing the ODI Squad

Hesson remarked that the ODI team is still evolving, underscoring the importance of broadening the player pool and enhancing specific areas to ensure the best squad is prepared for the World Cup in the coming year and a half. He noted, "With the World Cup in mind, we need to expand our group. The ODI squad is a work in progress, and we must develop various areas to ensure we have the strongest team possible come World Cup time."

Encouraging Patience with Young Talent

The head coach also stressed the necessity of patience with younger players, acknowledging that not all can perform at the international level immediately. He stated, "With several young talents in the squad, we must be patient and focus on their development as they embark on their international careers. While it would be ideal for them to excel right away, the reality is that not everyone can achieve that immediately."
