Fazal Ruled Out Due to Back Injury

Pakistan faces an early challenge in their upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies as opener Abdullah Fazal has been sidelined due to a lower back injury. This injury occurred during a training session at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury while practicing in Tarouba, where the first Test is set to commence on Saturday. An MRI scan and medical evaluation have indicated that Fazal will need time for rehabilitation, and the Pakistan team has yet to announce a replacement.

Impact on Pakistan's Strategy

Fazal's absence is a significant setback for Pakistan, who aim to enhance their standing in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27. The young opener had shown promise during his international debut against Bangladesh in May, where he scored half-centuries in both innings, making him Pakistan's top run-scorer in that match. Over his first two Tests, Fazal has amassed 141 runs, including two fifties, with a highest score of 66.

Team Adjustments and Championship Stakes

With Fazal out, middle-order batsman Awais Zafar is likely to step in for his Test debut. Zafar was included in the squad as a backup for the injured Saud Shakeel and is now a contender for the playing XI.

Additionally, Imam-ul-Haq is anticipated to return to the opening position after missing the last Test against Bangladesh. Imam's absence allowed Azan Awais and Fazal to take on the opening roles.
