Pakistan to Attend Funeral of Iranian Leader Ayatollah Khamenei
Pakistan's Diplomatic Gesture
On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Pakistan will dispatch an official delegation to the funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following the cleric's assassination in US-Israeli airstrikes earlier this year. This move highlights the strong relationship between Islamabad and Tehran.
During a session in the National Assembly, Sharif shared details of his recent phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who expressed gratitude for Pakistan's support during difficult times and invited the country to attend Khamenei's funeral, set for July 3-4. Although Sharif may not attend in person, he assured that Pakistan would be represented at a high level.
"I confirmed to President Pezeshkian that our delegation will be present at the funeral to honor Ayatollah Khamenei," Sharif stated. He also emphasized Pakistan's significant role in facilitating the recent peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which he described as a notable diplomatic success for the nation.
Sharif noted that Pakistan's international reputation has improved due to its mediation efforts, with the country now being recognized with "respect and honor" across various regions, including East Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. He praised Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for his crucial role in advancing peace initiatives that led to the US-Iran agreement, as well as acknowledging the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
In addition to foreign policy discussions, the Prime Minister announced a significant decrease in fuel prices, aimed at providing relief to the populace. Subsequently, the National Assembly passed a resolution commending Pakistan's diplomatic efforts and recognizing its role in mediating peace between Washington and Tehran.
