Pakistan Navy's New Submarine: What You Need to Know About the Ghazi Launch in China
Launch of the Ghazi Submarine
Islamabad: The Pakistan Navy has officially launched its fourth Hangor-class submarine, named Ghazi, at the Shuangliu Base in China, as announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Wednesday.
This submarine is part of a series constructed by China, Pakistan's long-time ally, under a technology transfer agreement, according to the military's media wing.
The launch event, held in Wuhan, was attended by high-ranking officials from both nations, highlighting the strengthening ties between them.
Pakistan's agreement with China includes the procurement of eight Hangor-class submarines, with four being built in China and the remaining four set to be constructed in Pakistan by Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) under the Transfer of Technology (ToT) framework.
The Army has stated that these submarines will be equipped with cutting-edge weapons and sensors, enabling them to engage targets from significant distances.
Furthermore, the Hangor-class submarines are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
With the launch of Ghazi, the Pakistan Navy marks a significant achievement, as all four submarines currently under construction in China are now undergoing extensive sea trials and are nearing delivery to Pakistan.
The first submarine of this new class was launched in April 2024, followed by the second and third submarines on March 15 and August 15 of this year, respectively.
This class of submarines, named after the PNS Hangor, features diesel-electric propulsion with air-independent technology, allowing for extended travel distances before needing to surface.
