Pakistan Faces Severe Electricity Crisis Amid Prolonged Outages

Pakistan is currently enduring a significant electricity crisis, with citizens experiencing extended and frequent power outages. This issue is particularly acute in major cities such as Lahore and Karachi, where the disparity between electricity demand and supply has resulted in unexpected blackouts that disrupt daily life.
Despite the government's recent announcement of a limited load-shedding schedule to address fuel shortages, the reality on the ground is much more severe. In numerous areas, outages are reportedly lasting two to three times longer than the official estimates. While the government has planned for cuts of approximately 2 to 2.5 hours between 5 PM and 1 AM, many residents are facing unannounced outages lasting between 8 to 16 hours.
A report from Bloomberg highlighted that officials believe managing electricity supply during peak hours could help avoid significant tariff hikes for consumers. Authorities have also mandated that distribution companies inform the public about scheduled outages in advance to reduce unscheduled interruptions.
To conserve energy, the government has implemented additional measures, including a 50% cut in fuel allowances for government departments over the next two months. Furthermore, the official workweek has been shortened to four days, with offices operating at half capacity, allowing only a limited number of staff to be present, as reported by various media outlets.
In Lahore, the crisis has been exacerbated by gas shortages, further complicating the situation for households already struggling with unreliable electricity. In Karachi, residents in neighborhoods like Shadman Town have taken to the streets to voice their frustrations over the ongoing outages.
Across the country, many people are enduring power cuts that can last up to 15 hours daily, severely impacting their daily routines. This ongoing crisis is not only affecting households but is also having a detrimental effect on small businesses and industrial activities.
