Pabitra Margherita Comments on Bhupen Borah's Political Future

Political Speculations in Assam

Jorhat, June 12: Pabitra Margherita, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, expressed on Wednesday that the likelihood of former president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Bhupen Borah, switching to the BJP is "very slim."

Margherita stated, “Whether Borah decides to join another party is secondary. If he can detach himself from the so-called ‘Miya love’ and his longstanding political ties, he would be welcomed by any party. However, the critical question remains — can he break free from his habit of submitting to one family? The Congress tradition of bowing to the Gandhi family is hard to abandon. Given this context, the chances of Bhupen Borah aligning with a different party seem unlikely.”

In response to the ongoing speculation about his political trajectory, Borah reaffirmed his commitment to the Congress on Tuesday. He emphasized his intention to remain loyal to the Grand Old Party and uphold the trust placed in him by the people of Assam.

“I have stated this multiple times — I have led the opposition against this government, and after four decades in politics, I cannot suddenly change my perspectives,” Borah remarked to reporters on Tuesday.

Additionally, Margherita criticized Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi for his extended absence from the Jorhat constituency.

“Residents have informed me that Gaurav Gogoi has not been seen in the area for over a year. I encourage him to visit at least once — the locals would welcome him,” he stated.

He further quipped, “Gaurav Gogoi appears to be more interested in Pakistan and England. Even documents intended for the MP are now being directed to me.”

On Wednesday, Margherita also inaugurated several developmental projects and distributed sports equipment throughout various regions of Jorhat district.

He announced that approximately 26 sports organizations would receive a total of Rs 10 lakh for equipment and Rs 5 lakh for infrastructure development, as part of the government's ongoing initiatives to foster youth and sports activities.
