Owaisi to Campaign for AIUDF in Assam Elections
Owaisi's Upcoming Campaign in Assam
Guwahati, March 27: Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, is preparing to support Badruddin Ajmal, the chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), in Assam as the Assembly elections approach. This collaboration aims to unify minority voters in crucial constituencies.
Ajmal announced on Friday that Owaisi will be in Assam on April 2 and 3, where he is expected to participate in at least eight public meetings across various constituencies.
The campaign will primarily aim to rally support for Ajmal, who is contesting from the Binnakandi Assembly seat.
“I have maintained communication with Owaisi for quite some time. My son traveled to Delhi to formally meet him and discuss his visit to Assam, and he has agreed to come on April 2 and 3. We plan to organize at least eight events over these two days,” Ajmal stated during a press conference.
Owaisi's involvement is anticipated to energize the campaign, especially in areas with significant minority populations where the AIUDF has historically held sway. His addresses are expected to critique both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress, positioning the AIUDF as a vital regional player.
Ajmal, a notable figure in Assam's political scene, is striving to maintain his influence amid changing electoral dynamics. The party is focused on enhancing its grassroots engagement ahead of the elections, relying on its established support base.
In the 2016 Assam Assembly elections, the AIUDF made a significant impact by securing 13 seats, establishing itself as a formidable opposition in several minority-heavy constituencies.
By 2021, the party increased its representation to 16 seats as part of the Congress-led “Mahajot” alliance. Although the alliance posed a strong challenge, it ultimately fell short as the BJP-led coalition retained power with a decisive majority.
The AIUDF's electoral performance highlighted its ongoing significance while also revealing the difficulties it faces in broadening its appeal beyond its traditional voter demographic.
After the elections, Congress ended its partnership with the AIUDF, leading both parties to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections independently. Unfortunately, the AIUDF was unable to secure any seats in the parliamentary elections.
