Owaisi's Stand Against University Demolition

Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of AIMIM and a Member of Parliament from Hyderabad, expressed strong opposition on Saturday to the proposed demolition of buildings at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. He labeled the move as an attack on Muslim education. During his visit to Saharanpur, Owaisi emphasized that his party stands firmly in support of the university, arguing that this issue transcends a mere educational institution and touches upon the educational advancement of the Muslim community.

Concerns Over Educational Statistics

Referencing educational statistics, Owaisi pointed out that Muslims constitute approximately 19-20% of Uttar Pradesh's population, yet only about 3.5-3.7% are graduates. He further claimed that the literacy rate among Muslims in the state hovers around 53-54%, with even lower figures for Muslim women. He warned that demolishing the university's buildings would adversely affect the futures of thousands of students.

Impact on Students and Community

Owaisi noted that around 3,000 students are currently enrolled at the university. He argued that if there are legal or technical issues, they should be rectified within the framework of regulations rather than resorting to demolition. He stated that wanting to dismantle the university implies a desire to prevent Muslims from receiving an education, which he described as a direct assault on education.

Political Aspirations Ahead of Elections

Discussing the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Owaisi mentioned that his party aims to empower the community to establish its own political voice. He stressed that the goal is not merely about the number of legislators but whether elected representatives can freely address issues pertinent to their community. Citing Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Owaisi referred to a statement about silent legislators, asserting its relevance in today's political landscape.
