In a powerful display of dissatisfaction, outsourced workers from various government sectors in Himachal Pradesh gathered for a large protest in Shimla on Friday. They are calling for a comprehensive policy to guarantee job security and fair wages. The rally, which took place at Chaura Maidan, saw hundreds of participants voicing their grievances against the state government, pledging to escalate their protests until their demands are met.

Workers from essential departments such as Horticulture, Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, and Jal Shakti were notably present, indicating a rising tide of unrest among outsourced employees.

Many of the protesters have been in service for 15 to 20 years but still lack regularization and essential employment benefits. They expressed frustration over their continued employment under precarious contracts, which offer no long-term security.

Concerns over low wages were also prominent, with employees reporting earnings of around ₹13,000 per month, which they argue is inadequate given the increasing cost of living. They emphasized that their current salaries barely cover basic household expenses.

The situation has worsened due to recent layoffs of outsourced personnel in various departments, fostering an environment of fear and instability among the workforce.

During the demonstration, the workers reiterated two main demands: the establishment of a clear and consistent policy for outsourced employees to ensure job security, and the enforcement of the principle of 'equal pay for equal work' to rectify wage inequalities.

Ashwini Sharma, the convenor of the Outsourced Employees’ Union, stated that these issues have been consistently brought to the government's attention, yet no significant action has been taken. He warned that if the situation is not addressed promptly, workers will escalate their protests in the near future.

This protest has once again highlighted the challenges of outsourcing and job security in Himachal Pradesh, placing pressure on the government to address the concerns of a substantial segment of its workforce.
