Opposition's Protest Against Speaker's Decision

On Sunday, the opposition staged a walkout from an all-party meeting convened before the Parliament's monsoon session. This action was taken in response to the Speaker's decision to invite rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT) to the meeting. The incident unfolded after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla approved the merger of six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs with the faction led by Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Additionally, he sanctioned separate seating arrangements for 20 rebel TMC MPs who have joined a lesser-known party called NCPI.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari explained the opposition's stance, stating that the parties collectively decided to boycott the meeting in protest. He mentioned that the opposition walked out due to the Speaker's decision regarding the rebel MPs from TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT). TMC MP Mahua Moitra noted that the entire opposition, including Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, JMM, AAP, National Conference, Left parties, and Shiv Sena (UBT), walked out in protest. This was prompted by the inclusion of the so-called NCPI members, which inflated the TMC's representation to 28 in the list provided by the table office.

He further stated that the Speaker has not approved the merger of these 20 rebel MPs, and the petitions regarding their membership cancellation are still pending. Following the 91st Constitutional Amendment, there is no provision for forming a separate block. Therefore, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister's invitation to these 20 rebel MPs raises questions about their participation in the meeting. We expressed our strong opposition and exited the meeting. We thank all our opposition parties for their support.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant questioned the legitimacy of the recognition given to the rebel MPs, asking which legal provision supports this. He stated that they also protested and walked out of the House. AAP MP ND Gupta remarked that in their case, 7 out of 10 Rajya Sabha MPs have been hijacked, and their petition regarding the validity of this situation is still pending. Despite this, they have been allocated separate independent seats in the Rajya Sabha. This is a clear abduction and murder of democracy.
