Opposition Parties Express Concerns Over Voter List Revision in India
Opposition's Letter to Chief Justice
Nearly two dozen opposition parties have reached out to Chief Justice of India, Justice Suryakant, expressing their worries regarding the Election Commission's 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) of the voter list. They claim that this process could undermine democracy and have urged the Supreme Court to intervene. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh revealed that the joint letter was signed by 23 political parties along with an independent MP. The decision to contact the Chief Justice was made during the 'India' alliance meeting held on June 8.
BJP Criticizes Opposition's Move
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the opposition's actions. Party MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi described the letter as a futile attempt to weaken democracy. He stated that the BJP firmly denounces the letter addressed to the Chief Justice and the unsuccessful efforts by certain political parties to undermine democratic principles. He pointed out that there are two aspects to this issue: a legal one and a political one.
Legal Justifications for SIR
Trivedi argued that courts have consistently validated the 'Special Intensive Revision' as a legal and standard procedure carried out by the Election Commission. He emphasized that from a constitutional perspective, the opposition has failed to present any factual issues before the court. This has led to public skepticism regarding their aspirations to gain power in states based on dubious voters.
Congress's Contradictory Stance
Trivedi also accused Congress of making contradictory statements on this matter. Referring to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, he noted that Tharoor had previously acknowledged that a similar voter list improvement process in Kerala had benefited Congress by removing fraudulent voters. He also mentioned Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar's directive for Congress workers to actively participate in the SIR process, questioning why the party is now opposing it at the national level.
