Opposition MPs Rally to Support Activist Sonam Wangchuk's Hunger Strike

Opposition Delegation Visits Sonam Wangchuk

New Delhi: A group of opposition Members of Parliament is set to visit Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram to encourage him to conclude his 25-day hunger strike. They aim to reassure him that the concerns regarding alleged irregularities in competitive exams and the need for accountability in the education sector will be addressed in Parliament, according to sources.

The delegation plans to persuade the activist, who has been on an indefinite fast for over three weeks, to end his protest by promising that the Opposition will raise these issues in the parliamentary discussions.

Among those expected to meet Wangchuk are Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose, and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas.

Previously, Wangchuk indicated he would cease his fast if he received assurances from MPs and political leaders that the matter of accountability in education would be discussed during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

However, after a police crackdown on protestors during the Cockroach Janta Party's "Sansad Chalo" march, he declared he would maintain his fast until such assurances were provided.

The climate activist joined the agitation led by the CJP at Jantar Mantar on June 28 and initiated his indefinite hunger strike to support students advocating for accountability regarding alleged examination irregularities, educational reforms, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Wangchuk was forcibly taken by the Delhi Police to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18 but has since been transferred to Medanta Hospital following a directive from the Delhi High Court.
