Political Shift in Uttar Pradesh

On March 17, 2026, a significant political development unfolded in Uttar Pradesh. Prominent opposition figures, including Akhilesh Yadav from the Samajwadi Party, Mayawati of the Bahujan Samaj Party, and Rahul Gandhi from the Congress, have collectively voiced their support for awarding the Bharat Ratna to the late Kanshiram, the founder of BSP. This call coincided with Kanshiram's 93rd birth anniversary on March 15, 2026, where Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Modi in a letter to recognize Kanshiram's contributions. Mayawati has long championed this cause, and now Akhilesh has also openly endorsed it. This unity is seen as a strategic move to consolidate the Dalit vote bank ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, where Dalit votes, constituting approximately 21%, could be pivotal.

Rahul Gandhi's Remarks During a 'Constitution Conference' in Lucknow, Rahul Gandhi hailed Kanshiram as a 'great warrior for social justice and a guide for Bahujan consciousness.' He stated in his letter to PM Modi:

  • "I demand that the Government of India honor the esteemed Kanshiram Ji with the Bharat Ratna. He paved the way for rights, participation, and self-respect for the Bahujan community."

  • Rahul further remarked that had Kanshiram been alive during Nehru's era, he would have been the Chief Minister of Congress. The Congress party also passed a resolution reiterating this demand, introducing a new slogan: 'Kanshiram's mission incomplete, Rahul Gandhi will complete it!'

Mayawati's Longstanding Stance Mayawati has been advocating for Kanshiram to receive the Bharat Ratna since 2008. At a tribute meeting in Lucknow on his birth anniversary, she stated:

  • "The central government should not delay in awarding the Bharat Ratna to Kanshiram, as he fought for the establishment of an equal society as per the Constitution."

  • However, she criticized Rahul's demand, accusing Congress of neglecting Ambedkar and failing to mourn Kanshiram's passing, labeling it as mere vote bank politics. Nonetheless, she continues to press the central government on this issue.

Akhilesh Yadav's Support Akhilesh Yadav has expressed his support through social media and public statements:

  • "Kanshiram Ji and the Samajwadi Party together provided direction to the nation. He deserves the Bharat Ratna."

  • While aligning with Mayawati's sentiments, he faced her rebuttal questioning why the district name Kasganj was changed if there was respect for Kanshiram. Despite this, all three leaders share a common demand for the Bharat Ratna from the central government.

Significance of This Political Move

  • The Dalit vote is crucial in the upcoming 2027 UP elections. The BSP's voter base has weakened, prompting Congress and SP to target it.

  • Rahul's appeal aims to strengthen Congress's foothold among Dalits, while Akhilesh is reinforcing the PDA (Backward, Dalit, Minority) formula.

  • This situation poses a challenge for Mayawati, as her core voter base relies on Kanshiram's legacy.

  • Pressure mounts on the BJP: failing to honor Kanshiram could lead to accusations of being 'anti-Dalit.' Yogi Adityanath has also paid tribute to Kanshiram but remains silent on the Bharat Ratna issue.

Central Government's Response So far, the Modi government has not issued any statement. The Bharat Ratna can be awarded posthumously (as seen with Ambedkar, who was not honored during his lifetime but later received recognition). Political analysts suggest that this demand will resonate leading up to the 2027 elections, potentially reshaping Dalit politics.
