Formation of a New Leadership Team

In a significant meeting held in Kolkata, a faction led by opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee established a new national leadership team. This move directly challenges the authority of Mamata Banerjee and the party's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. The internal dissent within the TMC has taken a crucial turn, as the rebel leaders have gone beyond merely contesting leadership to attempting a complete reorganization of the party, claiming their faction as the true successor.

The 31-minute meeting took place in a hotel in Kolkata, attended by rebel legislators, former councilors, and party officials from across the state. While the TMC's 'twin flower' election symbol was prominently displayed, notable figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and B.R. Ambedkar were featured on stage, but there were no images of Mamata Banerjee, who has long been the face of the party.

Addressing the assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee asserted that the party is facing a constitutional crisis. He argued that according to Article 20 of the TMC's constitution, a national working committee must be formed every three years. The rebel faction pointed out that the last committee was established on February 12, 2022, and its term ended on February 11 this year. Since no new committee has been formed since then, they contended that a reorganization of the party's structure was necessary.

During the meeting, a national working committee of ten members was approved, which included Arup Roy, Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Biplab Mitra, Akhruzzaman Ansari, Sabina Yasmin, Sandipan Saha, Rathin Ghosh, Javed Khan, and Ritabrata Banerjee; this was later expanded to a committee of thirty members. Senior legislator Arup Roy from Howrah Central was elected as the chairperson by a voice vote. After the meeting, Banerjee informed reporters that Arup Roy was unanimously chosen as the party president during the special session of TMC leaders and members.

Former ministers Biswas and Hakim, along with Ghosh and Yasmin, were appointed as vice-presidents. Ritabrata Banerjee, Khan, and Saha were designated as general secretaries, while Akhruzzaman Ansari was appointed treasurer. Reinforcing the legitimacy of this process, Banerjee emphasized that the proceedings were conducted in accordance with the party's constitution and that the Election Commission would be informed. He stated, 'It is not about what is real and what is not. We are TMC, and we will inform the Election Commission about the proceedings of today's special session. We have worked and collaborated.'

However, Banerjee adopted a conciliatory tone towards Mamata Banerjee, stating that if she wishes to become the chief advisor, she is welcome. Notably, after the meeting, there were speculations about Abhishek Banerjee's suspension, but the rebel leaders neither proposed nor adopted such a measure. Instead, by forming a new national working committee and appointing new general secretaries, this faction effectively removed Abhishek Banerjee from his position as national general secretary under the previous organizational structure.
