On Sunday, Jairam Thakur, the Leader of the Opposition, launched a sharp critique of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, referencing the late Virbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister, to challenge Sukhu's leadership and credibility.
Speaking to reporters in Mandi after tuning into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat, Thakur claimed that even Virbhadra Singh had previously voiced concerns about Sukhu's governance, labeling him as skilled in creating misleading narratives and engaging in political maneuvering. He noted a rising discontent within the Congress party, with some members attributing electoral victories to factors unrelated to Sukhu's leadership.
Concerns About Governance and Internal Strife
Thakur expressed that the current administration is grappling with credibility challenges, both in terms of governance and internal party dynamics. He mentioned that numerous Congress leaders are dissatisfied with the government's operations, although the ruling party has yet to officially respond to these claims.
In previous statements, Congress has asserted that its government embodies a collective mandate and has dismissed opposition critiques as politically motivated.
Allegations of Corruption and Political Implications
The former Chief Minister accused the Sukhu-led administration of being heavily involved in corruption, suggesting that these issues would surface with any future change in leadership.
"A shift in power will reveal multiple layers of corruption, and several high-profile individuals will face scrutiny," Thakur warned.
The ruling party has consistently denied such allegations, arguing that the opposition is merely attempting to divert attention from its own past governance.
Dispute Over Himcare Scheme
Thakur also defended the BJP government's Himcare health initiative, accusing the current administration of trying to undermine it with false and misleading information.
He dismissed allegations of irregular medical practices under the scheme, asserting that all treatments were conducted according to established packages and could be verified through official documentation. He referenced insights shared in the Assembly by Bharmaur MLA and medical expert Dr. Janak Raj regarding the scheme's execution.
Ongoing Political Tensions
These comments highlight the ongoing political discourse between the opposition and the ruling party in Himachal Pradesh, with both sides concentrating on leadership, governance records, and public initiatives. While the BJP has ramped up its criticisms, the Congress is anticipated to respond by reiterating its policy decisions and governance priorities.
