Allegations Against the Congress Government
On Saturday, Jairam Thakur, the leader of the opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's Congress government of engaging in "political vendetta." He claimed that the government is misusing police and vigilance agencies to target BJP leaders and workers across the state. During a press conference in Shimla, Thakur alleged that the state administration is attempting to silence the opposition by filing "false and fabricated" criminal cases against BJP leaders, former legislators, and their family members.
Claims of Intimidation Tactics
Thakur asserted that the government feels incapable of competing politically with the opposition, leading them to adopt a new strategy of intimidation. He noted that nearly a dozen current and former BJP legislators have either faced legal action or their family members have been targeted. Cases are being fabricated without any substantial evidence to tarnish the image of BJP leaders. Furthermore, he mentioned that elected representatives of the BJP in local bodies, such as Panchayati Raj institutions, municipal corporations, district councils, and block committees, are also receiving notices. He described this as a well-planned campaign of harassment.
Concerns Over Law and Order
Accusing the government of misusing the police force, the former Chief Minister stated that instead of focusing on law and order, the police are being utilized for political surveillance. He highlighted that while murders, shootings, and violent crimes are occurring, the police are preoccupied with monitoring opposition leaders. Allegations have surfaced that senior officials are engaged in surveillance and phone tapping late into the night. Thakur suggested that the government's primary objective appears to be gathering evidence against opposition leaders, filing vigilance cases, and creating false criminal charges. Without naming anyone, he claimed that tracking devices have been placed in the phones of certain political leaders, indicating widespread surveillance of opposition figures. He warned that if the BJP regains power in the state, officials involved in such activities will be held accountable.
