Opposition Intensifies Protest Against Chief Election Commissioner at Mock Parliament
Opposition's Strong Stand Against Chief Election Commissioner
In New Delhi, the opposition coalition known as 'India' has amplified its dissent against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. On Saturday, a special mock parliament was convened at the official residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. During this event, senior Congress leader and prominent lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi launched a fierce critique against Kumar, asserting that the Constitution and institutions like the Election Commission are not personal properties of any individual, and the nation will never allow anyone to manipulate the Constitution at will.
Concerns Over Election Commission's Integrity
Addressing the gathered opposition leaders and MPs at Kharge's residence, Singhvi accused the Chief Election Commissioner of failing to operate within constitutional boundaries, raising serious questions about his conduct. He emphasized the need for the Election Commission to maintain its impartiality, stating that it is an independent and autonomous body that cannot be swayed by personal influence or desires. This event aimed to send a strong message against the Chief Election Commissioner, expressing deep concerns regarding his operational methods.
Call for Accountability in Democratic Institutions
Singhvi further stated that citizens of India will not accept a situation where a person in a constitutional position disregards rules to govern the country according to their whims. The role of institutions like the Election Commission is crucial for the strength of democracy, requiring utmost sensitivity and transparency. During this symbolic protest, the opposition questioned Kumar's actions, reflecting their firm stance against him.
Unique Protest Strategy by the Opposition
The 'India' coalition had devised this unique form of protest against the Chief Election Commissioner, which the opposition parties termed 'Public Impeachment.' Through this mock parliament, various points and allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner were openly discussed. Although this is not an official impeachment process as per parliamentary rules, it serves as a symbolic demonstration of the opposition's dissatisfaction and discontent. Initially, the event was planned for Ram Leela Maidan or other public venues, but due to permission issues and inclement weather, it was relocated to Kharge's residence.
Voter List Controversy Sparks Opposition's Demands
The controversy primarily stems from issues related to the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list. The opposition alleges that during this process, a significant number of citizens and voters are being removed from the list, adversely affecting the voting rights of eligible voters. Consequently, the opposition has been persistently demanding Kumar's resignation. This protest is expected to escalate, as a grand rally of the 'India' coalition is scheduled for November 1 at the historic Ram Leela Maidan in Delhi. Following the mock parliament at Kharge's residence, all eyes in the political corridors are now on the upcoming rally and the opposition's strategies.
