Opposition Intensifies Criticism of Government Over Student Protests

Congress MP Demands Clarity from Home Minister

On Monday, K.C. Venugopal, a Congress MP, escalated the opposition's criticism of the central government. He called for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to clarify the situation regarding the alleged use of pellet guns on student protesters in Delhi and AK-47 rifles in Bihar. Speaking to the media during a protest in Parliament, Venugopal questioned the absence of the Home Minister during the debate.

Venugopal stated, "Kiren Rijiju is not our party leader; he represents the Government of India. What kind of government is this? The Indian government is using AK-47s against students in Bihar and pellet guns against students in Delhi. This is the government in power, and he is a representative of that government. Who cares about him? Our demand is clear: Where is the Home Minister? Where is he hiding? We deserve an answer! He must come to the Lok Sabha and explain who ordered the use of AK-47s in Bihar and pellet guns in Delhi! He must respond! People believe he is solely responsible for these atrocities."

Criticism of Force Against Unarmed Protesters

Congress MP Manish Tewari also condemned the alleged use of force against unarmed protesters, emphasizing that the legal procedures for crowd control were not followed. Tewari remarked to the media, "The key question is: Is it right to use pellet guns and AK-47s against unarmed and peaceful protesters? The straightforward answer is no, it is absolutely wrong. The Supreme Court has established a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for handling protests. However, the way pellet guns were reportedly used against unarmed students and the videos emerging from Bihar showing a constable wielding an AK-47 is sheer barbarism. It is inhumane and constitutes oppression."

Critique of the New Legislation

He also criticized the 'Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026', labeling it as a superficial solution akin to a 'band-aid'. Tewari stated, "If the government were genuinely serious, it would introduce comprehensive legislation to address the challenges in India's education sector. This bill is merely a response to quell public anger following police violence. There is nothing substantial in this bill."
